THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ‘TO’ AND ‘TOO’

To tell the difference between ‘to’ and ‘too’ can be a bit difficult in the beginning but it is no rocket science. Telling the difference between the words ‘to’ and ‘two’ is much easier. It is really nice and exciting to learn about those two words because they are really common words which could confuse you at times. This is the reason why you need to pay special attention while writing them or using them in your conversations in the English language.

Now, let’s look at the uses of the word ‘to’.

‘To’ as a preposition

Relationships between words can be shown by using the word ‘to’.

Let’s look at an example for clear understanding:

“Showing movement”

  • I am going to the washroom.
  • He will drive to the mall.
  • Carry that to the warehouse.

“Showing range of time or amount”

  • The hotel will be open from 9am to 10pm.
  • The document was 50 to 40 percent fake.
  • She took a tour from Las Vegas to Europe alone.

Usually the use of the word ‘to’ has more to do with movement or gap between two things but along with this, there are a lot of other differences in which the word ‘to’ can be used.

“Part of the phrasal verb

A phrasal verb is when we use ‘to’ along with a verb in a manner that makes ‘to’ a part of the verb itself. Phrasal verbs can have their own special or mixed meaning.

EXAMPLES

  • I’m really sorry for not reaching on time. I’ll definitely make it up to you.

Here, in this sentence, the phrasal verb is ‘make it up to’ which means to do something good to balance out something bad you have done or something which you couldn’t make it. Just like in the above-given examples, the word ‘to’ still carries some similar meaning. The word ‘to’ is showing some kind of gesture.

Another example is,

  • I’m a bit busy right now, can I get back to you in some time?

This situation may arise when you are talking to someone on a phone call. In this example, you may see that there is a kind intention of you asking to get back to the person you are talking to. The word ‘to’ is very common and it is a preposition in the above context, so you may find it in many other contexts too which will be different from the ones explained above. Once you understand the general meaning of the word ‘to’ you will know when you see it or hear it being used in other content or contexts.

Now that we know how to use ‘to’, let’s look at the uses of the word ‘too’.

‘Also’ and ‘additionally’ can be the two most common meanings of the word ‘too’.

Here are some examples to make your work easy:

  1. Are they invited too?
  2. He is wearing the same T-shirt too.
  3. Would you like to see my new painting too?
  4. Hey, I am visiting the same place too!

It is easy to spot the word ‘too’. The exciting part is that instead of using ‘too’, you can even use the word ‘also’ in any of the examples given above. For example, ‘Are they also invited?’

Have you ever heard from your peers that you are too bold, too loud, too much, and words like these. What they are trying to tell you here is that something in you is ‘too much’. Usually, it is said in a joking manner, but you must have heard it.

You must have heard many of the native English speakers talking like ‘wanna hang out?’, ‘gonna go to bed’. Over here, the words like’ wanna’, ‘gonna’ are used when merged with ‘to’. The actual statement to be used must be, ‘Do you want to hang out?’, ‘I am going to go to bed.’

We hope that you have understood the meaning of the words ‘to’ and ‘too’ and you must have not got confused between the two. Well, keep reading books and write-ups so that you may understand the usage of both words.
