9 ‘Wh’ questions and when can we use them?

The English language has a few question words that are used to ask the particular types of questions and usually, we call these question words as ‘Wh’ questions, because they ask questions and also, they have the letters ‘Wh’ included in them. ‘Wh’ questions are What, Why, When, Where, How, etc.

All the ‘Wh’ questions always end with a question mark.

• WHAT

‘What’ is the most commonly used ‘Wh’ type of question as it is used to gain information/details from someone.

For example,

1. What is it that you desire?
2. What? What did you just speak?

• WHEN

‘When’ is a ‘Wh’ word that asks something related to time.

For example,

1. When did you leave?
2. When did you watch this series?

• WHERE

‘Where’ is a ‘Wh’ question word that is used to ask about a place or a position.

For example,

1. Where did they run away?
2. Where did you go?

• WHICH

‘Which’ is a ‘Wh’ question that is used to ask about choices.

For example,

1. Which English songs do you hate the most?
2. Which designer belt do you want?

• WHO

‘Who’ is a ‘Wh’ question that is used to ask about what/which person or people.

For example,

1. Who were you looking at?
2. Who changed the channel?

• WHOM

‘Whom’ is a ‘Wh’ question word that is used to ask what/which person or people. 

For example,

1. Whom were you listening to?
2. Whom did you pass by?

• WHOSE

‘Whose’ is a ‘Wh’ question word that is used to ask about ownership.

For example,

1. Whose house is this?
2. Whose car is this?

• WHY

‘Why’ is a ‘Wh’ question that is used for the purpose of reasoning.

For example,

1. Why did you do that?
2. Why would anybody say that?

• HOW

‘How’ is a ‘Wh’ question word that is used to ask about the manner or even condition or quality.

For example,

1. How was the test?
2. How did you reach there?
