MEANING OF POSSESSIVE PRONOUN

A possessive pronoun is majorly used in order to refer to a specific person/people or it can also refer to things or things that belong to a person/people and at times even to animal/animals or even thing or things. The use of possessive pronouns can depend on:

• Number
• Person
• Gender

Let us take a look at some of them along with some examples. Remember that each of this pronoun can function as a subject or an object. It can also refer to a singular or plural antecedent.

EXAMPLES

1. Look at the house. Mine is the bigger one. (Subject – ‘my house’)
2. I like your dress. Do you like mine? (Subject – ‘my dress’)
3. She looked everywhere for your watch. She found hers but she couldn’t find yours. (Subject – ‘your watch’)
4. All the drawings were good but hers was the best. (Subject – ‘her drawing’)
5. Kevin found his debit card but Halem couldn’t find hers. (Subject – ‘her card’)

Remember that the interrogative pronoun ‘whose’ can also be considered a possessive pronoun which can be called an interrogative possessive pronoun.

1. There were 10 chocolates on the table and I wondered whose it was.
2. The house has been abandoned for months now. Whose house is it?
