8 CATEGORIES OF GRAMMAR

Let us look at the 8 categories of Grammar explained in short and in the simplest language.

Let us understand with an example:

The word ‘boy’ is a noun. Nouns are categorized as ‘numbers’. The values related to this category will either be singular or plural.

  1. The girl is singing.
  2. The girls are singing.

The most common categories of Grammar.

  • Number:

One of the categories of grammar is ‘Numbers’. Numbers show the quantity. Over here, in the above given example, singular means one and plural means two or more than two.

  • Gender

With the help of Gender, we identify the sex of a particular person. It falls under the property of pronouns. Gender has three values – masculine (male), feminine (female), and neuter (indicates everything else).

  • Case

Nouns and pronouns have another category called ‘Case’ and it depicts its connection to the remaining sentence. There are three types of values – subjective, objective, and possessive.

  • Person

There are three values attached with ‘person’, namely the first person, second person, and third person.

  • Tense

Tense is a verb property that is relevant to the location in time. The past and present are the two values of the tense.

  • Mood

This is a property of verbs that helps in connecting with the speaker’s feelings. Indicative, imperative, and subjunctive are the three types of ‘mood’ values.

  • Voice

The ‘voice’ talks about the relation of subject to action. Active and passive are the two ‘voice’ values.

  • Degree

Degree shows gravity, depth or amount. Possessive, Comparative, and Superlative are the three ‘degree’ values.
