THE EMPHATIC PRONOUNS

WHAT IS EMPHATIC PRONOUN?

Words like myself, yourself, himself, herself, yourselves, ourselves, and themselves come under the category of Emphatic Pronouns. Do note that the given words can either play the role of emphatic pronouns or reflexive pronouns too. The major function of this type of pronoun is to refer back to another Noun or a Pronoun in a certain sentence. Emphatic Pronouns, as suggested by the name, are used to create focus or emphasis on something.

EMPHATIC PRONOUN EXAMPLES:

  • The student himself was caught.
  • I myself played on the ground today.
  • You can hold it for yourself.
  • She told the story herself.
  • Why don’t you put on the cover yourself?
  • We are completing the project by ourselves!
  • They themselves are coming at the wedding.
  • I myself finished the design.

In a sentence, you can either use this type of pronoun, or you may not. The difference, in both cases, would be that if the sentence contains this pronoun, then it will have more emphasis than the sentence that does not contain the same.

CAN WE REMOVE EMPHATIC PRONOUNS FROM A SENTENCE?

Yes, we can remove Emphatic Pronouns from a sentence. Even if the Emphatic Pronouns are removed, the actual meaning of the sentence will remain unaffected. However, Emphatic pronouns provide emphasis as it is quite an important factor.
